Living with it
What a hot pan actually does to a counter
Granite and quartzite take heat. Quartz is another story. Here’s the honest version, not the brochure version.

Natural stone
Granite and quartzite are born in heat. A pot off the stove usually isn’t a crisis. Thermal shock — a blazing pan on a cold slab, over and over — can still stress a seam or a weak spot. Trivets are cheap insurance. We still tell people the stone can take more heat than the resin products.
Quartz and butcher block
Quartz is bound with resin. Direct heat can scorch or discolor it. Butcher block will mark. Use a board or a trivet. That’s not us being fussy — it’s how the material is made.
What we tell you in the kitchen
If you cook hard and hate trivets, we’ll nudge you toward granite or quartzite. If you want a white, even look and you’re careful with pans, quartz is fine. We’ll have this conversation at your house, not after set day.
