Sealing: who needs it, and how often
Some stone wants a sealer. Some doesn’t. A water-drop test beats a calendar.
What sealing actually does
Sealer doesn’t make stone bulletproof. It slows down how fast oil, wine, and coffee soak in, so you have time to wipe. It does not stop etching on marble — that’s the acid changing the surface, not a stain sitting on top.
Granite and quartzite
Most of the granite and quartzite we set wants a sealer about once a year, sometimes longer if the water still beads. We’ll seal it before we leave. After that, if a drop of water darkens the stone and stays, it’s time again. We can come back and do it, or walk you through it.
Quartz
No sealer. Wipe with mild soap and water. Skip the abrasive powders and the mystery ‘granite’ sprays.
Marble
Plan on more care. Seal it, wipe acids fast, and expect a lived-in look if it’s a kitchen. On a vanity it’s easier. If an old marble top is dull rather than ruined, we can often polish and seal it instead of tearing it out.
